Church of England Quarterly Review

The Church of England Quarterly Review (CoEQR) was started in 1837 with the avowed aim of taking a High Church position in opposition to the Tractarian views then being espoused in the British Critic. The CoEQR was initially published by William Pickering, however from 1839 through 1853 the publisher was William Edward Painter. In 1854 the CoEQR was published by Sampson and Low, and in 1855-1858 the publisher was Partridge, Oakey and Co.

There were several editorial and ownership changes, and with each change there were clear changes in the tone and philosophy of the periodical. Early editors, who adopted ultra-Protestant positions and sometimes employed adversarial invective, were the playwright George Stephens and the minister Edward Thompson. During the years 1840-1843 and 1854-1858 the editor was the prolific and more moderately-toned cleric, traveller, and antiquarian Henry Christmas. For some period in the mid 1840s the Irvingite-leaning John Owen Tudor was the editor.
