The Academy was founded in 1869 and was "aimed at the niche between the smart Oxbridge levity of the Saturday Review and the middlebrow stodginess of the Athenaeum." Originally a monthly, from 1871 it was published weekly. Review articles were signed. For an essay on the Academy, see "The Academy" by Christopher Kent in Alvin Sullivan's British Literary Magazines: The Victorian and Edwardian Age, 1837-1913 (1984).
The Curran Index cites articles by selected prominent men of letters during the years 1874-1888.
