    Museum keeper and journalist; keeper of the National Gallery; entered Royal Academy Schools in 1853; contributed to Nineteenth Century, Cornhill Magazine, London Review, Punch (as "Jack Easel or Our Roving Correspondent") and other periodicals; wrote Hints on Household Taste, in Furniture, Upholstery and other Detail (1868), A History of the Gothic Revival in England (1872).
